Our History
Groundbreaker Soil Solutions was formed by Alec Spain in 2022 who has over 20 years in the tree care industry to serve the growing demand for tree rootzone health services. Historically tree health has focused on what is above the ground and little attention was paid to what was going on below the surface. This is despite the fact that soil is fundamental to a tree's health.
Tree's need air and moisture in the soil for the roots to be able to function and to allow them to absorb nutrients and minerals. Sometimes the soil in the rootzone of a tree becomes compacted for a variety of reasons, whether it be a high volume of human footfall, machinery driving under the tree or livestock causing poaching of the soil.
This can result in the soil becoming anaerobic or devoid of oxygen which will result in the dieback of roots and ultimately dieback in the crown of the tree and can potentially lead to its death.
If compaction has occurred we have the technology to reverse this outcome. By using a probe connected to a mobile air compressor we can alleviate compaction and open the pores in the soil to once again allow for the flow of air and moisture to the roots.
We also have the capability to inject liquid nutrients into the soil following decompaction providing the roots with an ample source of nutrients to tap into

Pneumatic soil decompaction
We use a 65cm probe to penetrate deep into the soil. A blast of air is released though this probe, fracturing the soil and allowing air and moisture to reach the roots of the tree, breathing life back into the soil
Nutrient injection
We have the ability to inject nutrients directly into the soil using the decompaction probe. This provides the tree with and ample supply of nutrients to tap into following decompaction.
Air spading
We provide and pneumatic excavation service to investigate where a trees roots are located to prevent damage to them during construction works. We also carry out radial and vertical mulching to reintroduce organic matter to the soil.
Tree surveys and consultancy
We also provide and comprehensive consultancy service and we carry out tree condition surveys, roadside tree surveys and also BS: 5837 surveys for planning applications
